Home Windmills Can Play a Part in Energy Independence

home windmill, windmill power, residentual windmills, Renewable Energy, Rural Energy Independence, Off-Grid, Sustainable Living

If you are interested in living off grid then home windmills are only part of the equation. You will need to consider everything from energy conservation to solar power to home windmills.

“The Renewable Energy Handbook: A Guide to Rural Energy Independence, Off-Grid and Sustainable Living” is a book that will get you started. If you are ready for this type of home improvement then this is the book for you. This is a great book for homes that are rural and not close to the power grid, but you will find it useful for in town homes as well.

Getting off the grid is a complicated thing and you will need to get information from numerous sources. You will not get all of your answers in just one place so don’t expect to. Not all of the families that manage to get off the grid do it exactly the same way. I am telling you this because I am suggesting another book to get you moving in the right direction, but I don’t want you to think this will be the only book on the subject you will need. It is a good book with lots of useful information, but it isn’t perfect. The writer knows his stuff and is a really smart guy, but he can get a bit preachy. If you’re like me you don’t want to be lectured about living, so just ignore those parts.

Windmill Power – Setting up can be Pricey

Windmill power can get you off the power grid and save you money. Windmill power also costs so much it could take you years before your savings is enough to pay for the wind turbine. What if you don’t have enough wind where you live? What if the wind you have isn’t going to give you enough power to be worth it?

Try this Wind Speed Indicator to find out how much windmill power you will have. You will get pick the up vane and 50′ of connecting tube. This neat little device is at GAIAM and you can check it out by clicking on the picture.

Windmill Power From out of the Way Places

Windmill power is one very important source of power that needs to be expanded. In a previous post we talked about the possibility of illness that could be caused by living to close to a windmill farm. If that concerns you then you are in luck. Plans for windmill farms located out in the ocean are in the works. So far five countries have embraced this clean and plentiful source of power and more are coming.

Although these offshore wind turbine farms are being fought off by residents of costal communities. For example a planed windmill project in Nantucket has been kept from going forward for years. Others are still in the planning stages, “Early last month the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities announced approval to construct 96 wind turbines located 16-20 miles off the shore of Atlantic City.” stated by Anita Ferguson of the delmarvanow.com.

A Different Spin On Windmill Electricity

New technology for windmill electricity generation still excites me. While I was surfing I found just that on the website for Boise, Idaho’s channel 7 TV:

“The windmill, called the Blackhawk, is a vertical axis wind turbine with an articulating rotor. The windmill rotates more like a top rather than a clock when faced with wind.”

Manufactured by Comprehensive Precision Machining in Boise, Idaho, this windmill has an intriguing layout. According to the story, it is based on a helicopter and can generate a good amount of power.

This gives us another option for generating the power we need. The company’s website is here. It’s not for sale yet, but according to the site where I found this, it is supposed to be available early next year. I’m betting it’s worth the wait.

Windmill Power of Yesteryear

Finding sources of sustainable energy is becoming more and more important.  But using windmill power to help us work isn’t new.  I was looking for information on windmills today, and came across this site.  They have a collection of windmills from the early days of the American West, back when windmill power was harnessed to pump water and other chores on the frontier.  I guess good ideas are timeless.

Windmill Design On The Cheap

Windmill Design Book

With the economy on shaky ground and money possibly becoming tight, we need to look even harder for ways to save cash.

Windmills are a great way to cut down on power bills, but some of those systems run into the thousands of dollars. I have been looking for windmill designs that help cut down on bills, and are relatively cheap.

Earth 4 Energy by Michael Harvey shows you how to design windmills and build it for as little as $200. It also has information on building a solar power system.  It even teaches you how to get free batteries to store that power.

How to Build a Windmill? Check Out This Book

Would you like to learn to build your own wind turbine? The cost of buying windmills new can be a bit expensive. If you are interested in exactly how windmill works then this book is just the thing for you. If you are in the USA then the European measurements might throw you, but it should be easy enough to figure out.

Do you have enough wind to use windmill electric power?

Test the wind around your home to find out if windmill power is for you. This handy little tool is called a Handheld Windspeed Meter. If you have regular winds it can let you know how fast they are moving. This meter has two ranges, the first is 2 to 10 mile per hour, and the second is 4 to 66 miles per hour. You can see the speed by viewing the floating ball in the clear tube. This contraption is 6 inches tall and comes with a convenient carrying case. And the best part is that this windspeed meter will only set you back $20.00 US. That isn’t much to find out if you can use a windmill to power your home.

Check it out.

Start out your new house the right way with residential solar power

Residential solar power is another great way of saving money on your electric bill.

If you are building a house this is a great idea, this one needs to be incorporated into the house plans and added from the beginning.

Does it take a rocket scientist to repair an aging wind turbine?

A father and son team in Texas have figured out how to fix a part in wind turbines that tends to wear out after years of use.

According to Sheryl Hall of dallasnews.com “One of those parts is an 18-inch-diameter device called a variable speed controller. A busted one can stop a 300-foot giant dead in its tracks.”

The father and son team run a company called Orbital Machine Works LLC in Lewisville, Texas. They are so good at what they do, parts are sent to them from as far away as Ireland. The manufacturer in Denmark can’t fix the part as fast as the Texas duo.

So does it actually take a rocket scientist?

According to the same article “Both are rocket scientists – literally – and considered experts in high-powered amateur rockets. They (and their 20-foot-tall creation, Aurora, Supreme Goddess of the Sky) appeared in a 2003 documentary still seen on the Discovery Channel and the Science Channel.”

Here’s then link to read the original article.
